Gaim and the GIMP both bundle GTK+ with their downloads, right? I haven't tried both on one computer (would they mind if I installed Gaim here at work? ;) but I think that you could install either one from that without any grief.

I'm still using 1.x because frakking around with GTK on my WinDoze laptop is a pain in the drain. Last time I upgraded Gaim, it was because I had to upgrade GIMP, another beast that uses GTK. GIMP wasn't very useful as it would blow up when creating a new image, and I think there's still a bug in this version with stroking a path. *grumble*

The only IM program I've paid for in my life is one for my Treo, because there aren't any full-featured multi-IM clients for free that I've been able to find for a Palm environment (that work) IM+ is actually quite good in that respect. (Yes, I am among the Treonoids now.)

The status UI has always annoyed me whenever I've checked in on it. I don't want a crippled input box there at all; I want a popup with the imhtml toolbar when I pick away and *nothing* when I unaway. I don't use available messages. And then I don't want to see my god damn away message unless I add myself to my buddy list and get my own info.

I haven't touched gaim code in 4-5 years though so I haven't felt like complaining without a patch attached. They're pretty obsessed with picking a One True Way these days and not letting you pick one behavior or another.

I predict this will have a lot of Windows users running back to Trillian. (Not that I have any idea what that works like, but. The teenage girl usage model is entirely different from Sean Egan's usage model, if you know what i'm sayin'.)
